Angela Merkel, so the story goes, came to politics “out of nowhere”, without ever seeking it. This documentary takes exactly that narrative as its starting point – and turns it around. “For every tree is known by its own fruit.” The film follows the traces of an origin: a father who, in the middle of the Cold War, moves against the tide from West to East and is nicknamed “the Red Kasner” in the GDR. A grandfather whose life is full of changes of sides, and whose death happens at a place and under circumstances that still raise questions today. And a family that enjoys privileges others in the same system could only dream of. Who was this woman really, before she became the most powerful person in Europe – and why, the film asks, was none of this ever cleared up?

Voices on the film (translated from German):

„I bow my head to everyone who still upright speaks the truth and dares to ask critical – and bitterly necessary – questions. Robert Cibis, together with his team at OVALmedia, is one of those upright and unshakeable people. His work deserves recognition and support – A LOT OF SUPPORT. His latest project, All About Angela Merkel, really should be seen by everyone.“

Norbert Schwarzer, blogger and CEO of SIOMEC

„High-profile interviewees such as former head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution Hans-Georg Maaßen, the writers Peter Hahne and Vera Lengsfeld and the SPD dissident Thilo Sarrazin talk about their personal encounters and impressions. The Merkel biographers Gerold Keefer and Gertrud Höhler provide plenty of new and surprising information even for those who have followed the former chancellor’s career critically. A central conclusion of this first part: there were influential helping hands that purposefully promoted Angela Merkel’s rise. (…) The short-term subscription you need to watch the film (and many other interesting documentaries and interview series) is worth every single cent.“

„Alles über Angela“ – Oliver Zimski (German original)

„The dramaturgy is particularly impressive. Starting from Merkel’s often-quoted statement that she came to politics out of nowhere, the film develops a multi-layered narrative about origins, family influences and historical background. Archive material, eyewitness accounts and documentary research are skilfully interwoven and create a tension more reminiscent of a political thriller than a conventional documentary.“

„Merkel war ein Maulwurf“ – David Berger (German original)

„Connections like these are what make this documentary. It brings together the puzzle pieces of a concrete case, while pointing to something universal: structures and patterns that go beyond Merkel.“

„Dokumentationsreihe «Alles über Angela»“ – Eugen Zentner (German original)

„Technically perfect in a sober documentary style, this very worthwhile film informs about selected topics in Merkel’s career before the chancellorship.“

„Fast alles über Angela Merkel“ – Jobst Landgrebe (German original)
