The Children | KOLLATERAL
“There is no age in which everything is experienced as intensely as in childhood. We grown-ups should remember what that was like.” (Astrid Lindgren)
In the second part of the Sweden film we remember: the children talk about loneliness in quarantine, about compulsory masks and compulsory tests in German schools, about lost joys and lost friends. A visit to Sweden shows a different world.
If the mask does not sit properly, then you have to go to the head teacher, and she keeps telling you: put your mask on properly, put your mask on properly. Then they all put them on properly, but it keeps slipping down. The teachers simply do not get it, that it keeps slipping down. No matter how hard you press it onto your nose. It just slips down, and then you get a telling-off. And after that you go straight to the head. I did not have any illness at all, just this corona.
I felt really good, but I just had this coronavirus. It was very silly that I had to stay at home for so long, just because a few viruses were inside my body. But I felt really good, just like every day when I do not have corona. I once went shopping. I wanted to fetch groceries, because Mum was cooking. I had one of those medical masks on.
Then I went into the shop. The man who owns the shop immediately told me off, because I was supposed to wear an FFP2 mask. Luckily I was able to do the shopping, but I really got into trouble because I had worn a medical mask. After that I did not really want to go to that shop again, because if I ever take my medical mask by mistake, then he might not let me into the shop again. When my friend had to go into quarantine, he sat in front of the computer the whole time, shut up in his room.
He also has a little sister, who sleeps in the same room. Because of corona the little sister has now moved out into the living room as well, to sleep there. Always the food outside the door. If he needs a sheet of paper, for example: a sheet of paper outside the door, everything outside the door. They also called him on the watch, the whole time, when something was outside the door. The parents did not even dare to come near him when he had corona. It is quite odd to put everything outside the door the whole time. That is very mean, because they are a family.
The family does not want to get corona, but even so, they may get corona anyway. I do not think it is very cool that the food is put outside the door and that they only call. Because somehow, for me that is stupid, because he is very lonely. Because he only gets called, the food outside the door. Or a sheet of paper, with pens. And he does something on his own there, because nobody is in his room, and his sister is not either. I think that is very unkind. The first lesson at school was very cool.
Because you could really do a lot there. And you could also watch the others working. The difference from Germany is that you are not allowed to sit next to each other. You have to wear masks, which is not usually done here. All this mask-wearing is not very nice either. In Germany you are also not allowed to … At school you would immediately be told off if you brought a Rubik's cube with you. Here you could be a bit louder in lessons than in Berlin.
Not shouting around, but playing with a Rubik's cube. And there you had one of those computers. And you could do a few things with the computer. And it was cool, because I could help Bamian there. At the German school we had to show a mask exemption, so that we could walk around at school without a mask. But at the Swedish school you do not have to. And at the German school you also had to test yourself every week now, or you get vaccinated. And here you do not have to do any of that.
And at my school too, I have a mask exemption. So I was allowed to go to school without a mask and to do a lot of things. But then my teacher said I was not allowed to play with the other children, at a distance, that is. And then I did not really have much fun. For example, we could not play tag any more. So then we mostly went behind the bushes. With my friends we had a little hiding place, and we played there too. One of the interesting things, since you asked about the German families, that some of the German parents are saying, is that the IB system is more conceptual than what they would be learning in Germany.
In Germany you learn the lesson and then you say the lesson. And that's more or less it. But here they have to work more independently and more with concepts. And that's one of the differences. So my name is Sandra, I'm Swedish and I've worked at the International School of Älmhult for 15 years now, so I've been here quite some time. And it's been a really big development for the school since I started. We had less than 50 students in the whole school and now we have around 500, so a huge development. I mean, since we've had an increase of students, of course all nationalities have increased, but right now we have 36 German students.
And I had a German student starting in my class in PYP 3 this school year. And they said the reason to move here was because of the covid situation, that there were strict restrictions in Germany and they felt here in Sweden they could live a more free life. But we don't have to. I don't wear my mask any more, because it is very annoying.
We only have to test if someone in our class has corona. Otherwise we don't have to test.
Weil da konnte man echt viel machen. Man muss Masken tragen, was man hier üblicherweise nicht macht.
