Clinic Staff Stand Up | KOLLATERAL
At the beginning nobody knew how dangerous the new corona virus was. Nurses and doctors still had to do their work. They risked their lives for their profession, for their patients. Many were infected – vaccinated or unvaccinated alike. Most of them have recovered by now. But for the politicians only a vaccinated nurse is a good nurse.
Two days after Olaf Scholz was elected chancellor, the German parliament passed, as its first law, compulsory vaccination in medical institutions and care homes. Now it is to be put into force. Thousands of health workers face dismissal. But the clinic staff are standing up.
Yes, I am sitting here now simply because I am unvaccinated. Because I decided for myself not to get vaccinated, for medical reasons, very personal medical reasons. And now I am affected by it, having to leave my profession because of the facility-based vaccination mandate, or being thrown out. And against that I am standing up and getting involved. With this group, Clinic Staff Stand Up. I find it a bit hard that this is hitting me like this now, after fighting for two years, that I now have to fight for my job and for my vocation. But I have no other option at all. We really believed that the law would not come.
We believed it. And then it came. And then all at once the thought came up in this group: damn it, there are too few of us. We are simply just six people. What do we do, the six of us? We have so many colleagues, they are all vaccinated. And nobody is going to support us there at first either. And then one person from my group, Sebastian, says: we have only one chance, to become more. So we decided to build a wider network in Baden-Württemberg. And we drew up a letter so that everyone, and indeed everyone affected, could gather behind it. Elderly care, the occupational therapists, the physiotherapists, the administrative staff, the auxiliary workers, the caretakers. Whatever we could not find in it. And in two and a half weeks we brought this letter to 6,334 signatures.
And these really are people who do not want to be vaccinated. Really not. Not even now, after all this pressure. So what I would still like to have on the agenda today is the letter. How do we proceed with that now? 6,334 signatures and no answer from the media. We have actually written to everything there is, haven't we? I think so too. This time the NZZ did not react either. Really not, no. I was surprised. All the newspapers we thought would react — nothing came at all. Well, I had also written to Die Welt, and no answer came there either. I am somewhat astonished; we wrote specifically to the media where we had already noticed that they actually report a little more honestly.
Die Welt was among them, for a while Bild was among them too. Bild is of course not the paper I read. But we had the feeling that they were asking the right questions. Yes, it keeps flipping. Yes, if you look at the current reporting. Nothing came anywhere, really. Well, the Schwarzwälder Bote did contact me once, but then wanted a contact straight away. We were supposed to go public. And so I said that I would rather do without that for now, because in contact with the media I am also so cautious now that I first want to see how they report at all, because of course we are exposed to the danger of framing. We actually only want to bring our truth to the public. But the public currently seems, despite 6,300 signatures, in Baden-Württemberg alone, not to be interested.
And nothing has come from the social ministry either? Nothing has come from the social ministry either, exactly. So, how do we keep building up pressure there? That is my question. Do we have any way of building up more pressure there? If these people from the health system really do stand firm now, really now by the 16th, then this will really stir up quite a lot … I mean, this has the potential really to change everything here. And to bring people together as well. Because for health care people go out on the streets together and perhaps stick together in that area. That has enormous potential. I do think that if people could recognise that for themselves, then it really could bring a turning point. Yes, this is a very nice registered letter that I received by delivery from my clinic management, from our board.
In which I am required to produce my proof of vaccination. By 15 March at the latest, which of course I do not have. Yes, and when you read it like that, it frightens you. Because there really are very plain words in there. So, let me quote from it. And then it goes on to say in there, or rather, from the notification by the health office, to receive no more salary.
Now, I work in an intensive care unit. There is a specially designated break room there, it is even labelled. That is where I then take my 30-minute break alone. So the consequence is that, as an unvaccinated member of staff, I am apparently seen as a danger, even though I test myself daily. I discussed it with my management team. Yes, and they still insist on this break arrangement being observed. Well, until mid-November I was still working as an occupational therapist in an outpatient practice. So, a varied clientele, from children, neurological patients, hand therapy. So I was out and about everywhere. On home visits too, but treating in the practice.
And then in mid-November my boss dismissed me. Because I had health problems with the FFP2 mask. And I simply said: right, stop, here is my health limit. I cannot go on. I want to have it examined first. I want to protect my patients too, yes. But I have to protect myself as well. And I am happy to go on working with a surgical mask until that is cleared up, until I know what is going on with me. And then I was told quite plainly that is not possible, I am given the instruction. And I have to wear it. And anyway, nobody had any respect left for me as a human being, because I am unvaccinated in the team.
I had the first vaccination. I did not feel well afterwards. Really not well. Three, four days, and headaches for weeks afterwards. I thought, okay, you survived, you were lucky. And then of course I had to have the second one too. After that I felt ill for much longer. With great, great … I honestly do not know today how I was still able to work. I was dog-tired every day. Sometimes, when I was driving, I thought: I have to pull over. You cannot go on, lie down. Well, I had a great many problems from this vaccination. And then … then from one day to the next I was suddenly, according to the politicians, no longer vaccinated.
Well, from March on it was: out of the job. I am 58 now, I love my profession. For me a very difficult situation, because I simply say now that on the basis of this data and these facts I am supposed to lose my profession. That what gives me so much pleasure, what I do out of full conviction, is simply to be gone, just because I am not willing to be vaccinated. And yes, for me it really is an incredible injustice. And from my point of view — and I can only cope with it with great, great difficulty. So, vaccination is not an option for me. I trust my immune system. And I can only really appeal that people who do not want to be vaccinated should not have their lives made hard, and should not have drawn off from them the strength they need to do their job.
I find that pretty harsh, because I simply see it as making me feel almost cheated. Two years ago it did not actually matter, because then I was let loose on this clientele. And today, when I have the possibility of vaccination and do not want to take it, I am described as irresponsible — I find that harsh. I can add a small example. Before this first lockdown I had a patient who tested positive, he was a high-risk patient who had developed a temperature, which was a symptom, then we had to swab him, and then he had tested positive. Then he was isolated. I went to my superior afterwards and said: what do we do now, what does that mean for me personally? Then it was said that I should keep working until I had symptoms. That means I took the risk.
Or the patient, the next one, bore the risk that I might pass on a virus of which nobody yet knew what risk it holds for everyone. I found that pretty harsh. Well, for that you were, how shall I put it, of use at the beginning. And now I am supposed to let it be dictated to me that I must do something under compulsion that I actually do not want. I have also worked a few days in the emergency department now, helping out, and there I do have the impression, because I also explicitly ask when and how often, and with which vaccine, people were vaccinated, that dubious things do then turn up, and clinical pictures that, with those particular patients and in the absence of risk factors, I simply would not have expected. So, very frequent are heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmias, thromboembolic events such as pulmonary embolisms, strokes.
But also young people who suddenly are diagnosed with tumours, with cancer. It was really very noticeable that precisely those colleagues who had had themselves vaccinated were off sick more often. It was only one or two days, some longer as well. The side effects were really very noticeable. What I noticed with my neurological patients, above all with the stroke clients, a short time after the first or second vaccination: with one of them it was two weeks after the first vaccination. With the others it was, with one of them, four weeks after the second vaccination. With one it was eight weeks after the second vaccination: another stroke. Although they were actually very well stabilised and it was always said that the blood count and so on was all fine, the values were right.
They had also made good progress in therapy. And all at once their general condition deteriorated markedly, another stroke. The therapy goals went backwards again. So goals that we had actually already reached were gone again. Where I said, hm … Well, there is a temporal connection with this therapy or with this vaccination. So we have to look at that. And then I asked my patients and said: hey, did the doctor look into it? Nope. Really, not at all? Did he not investigate whether there can be connections? After all, it is something completely new in medicine. Surely we have to collect data and collect practical experience. No, nobody looked into it. We cannot vaccinate away a virus, a respiratory virus that occurs seasonally. So these slogans that are made politically, we vaccinate everybody through and then this pandemic is over.
That is of course nonsense. And on top of that, I simply like to think back now and then to my medical studies. And there you learned how a medicine is normally authorised, how long that takes, which steps follow one after another. And for me that did not inspire confidence, the way this medicine was authorised, how quickly it was authorised. We are now seeing, little by little, that things are coming to light which really should have been investigated beforehand. So that means the vaccination does not convince me, neither in the time frame in which it was produced nor in its content, and that is increasingly proving true. The risk ratio for my age group and for me as a person does not convince me. And the handling does not convince me; it was simply dishonest from the start.
We had originally planned it so that the turning circle is here and the stage is set up here. Then my vision is that we form a kind of guard of honour at the start of the march, so make a kind of walkway. The drummers then stand along that walkway. And then the care workers walk along the walkway to the start of the march. Goosebumps! We have political people, we have unpolitical people. We have mothers, fathers, we have single people, we have gay men, lesbians, we have a bit of everything, Black people, white people.
Everybody is simply there, it is a cross-section. And that shows it too. You cannot say that this is the one group of people who are doing this now, whom you can put in a box. It is simply not like that. The time, these last two years at any rate, was not easy. Above all for the patients, who often were not allowed to receive visitors. In part, relatives were not even allowed to take their leave or to say goodbye to the dying. And I speak and stand here today also for all those who come out against a duty to be vaccinated. We want it to be voluntary.
We are not the ones who are against vaccination. I have known patients for whom it was certainly important, who belonged to the high-risk group and who certainly benefited from this vaccination. But we are, we do reflect a kind of microcosm. We are the recovered, we are the vaccinated, the boostered, the unvaccinated, the perhaps recovered. We reflect all the facets that this pandemic actually reveals. I just had an enquiry from SWR, asking whether they can do an interview with me. I spoke briefly with the reporter. I can already feel the energy behind it, that she immediately pushes my opinion in a direction I do not actually want to go in.
I simply want my opinion to be heard, and heard without judgement. She did keep trying to correct me a little. She sees it differently, and why not … It is only a vaccination. I come across that very often when I talk to people. It is only a vaccination. For some people it is not only a vaccination. This voice suddenly has no … We doctors are only human too. This fear, this panic that spread to society has of course spread to us doctors too, or to many doctors. A colleague of mine put it rather nicely. I see it the same way. He says: in the end I now see many of my colleagues as patients too. So for me too, doctors have become patients, on a psychological level.
Because otherwise I cannot explain to myself how badly, or how incompletely, the medical homework is being done on the whole. I see so many people of whom, as doctors, I actually think not little but a great deal, and who do their job well as such, but who are simply completely blind in this vaccination eye. People who apparently seem to have completely forgotten what they once learned. How can I say at the start of a vaccination campaign: the vaccine is safe and nothing will happen. Those are things nobody can say. None of us knew them. The most honest thing would have been to say: we do not know. But we believe we have to be so desperate that we are doing this now.
For me that would have been an honest answer. But what I hear from many colleagues is only comprehensible to me for psychological reasons, really. Of particular interest are of course our children. Then we looked at myocarditis and pericarditis in 17-year-olds. Hospital billing data. Back there we see the vaccination curve for children. And that it then rose there too. Namely from 648 and 563 cases to 1,019 cases. And the correlation is absolutely unambiguous. And I find that absolutely dreadful. Because children are not affected by covid-19.
And now they are affected by inflammation of the heart muscle, which in children entails massive damage, as in adults, by the way, too. In the press it is always said, it gets dismissed. What has happened then? The power has been unplugged. Exactly, our power has just been unplugged. Sabotage. As was to be expected. Did you see anybody? No, but it was unplugged here. It was unplugged here? That is why we are standing here for a while now. Vaccination has almost taken on a religious character.
There is no discourse in the intensive care units, or hardly any discourse. If a patient has a complication, then it is anything but the vaccination. You even have trouble bringing the vaccination into the discourse without being called a Nazi, a Querdenker or whatever. Personally I do not have those problems. But we have reports from colleagues who are downright bullied if they take a critical view of the vaccination. Medical colleagues too. There is an immense fear of saying out loud what one observes. I received a letter from a colleague who said: what am I supposed to do? I have instructions to go into the room only once in a shift. My patients lie in their excrement, with a mask, in the room. Of course you also have to ask yourself: do I follow such an instruction?
I would not follow such an instruction. But I can understand that many colleagues are frightened, intimidated. I cannot say: I am only allowed into the room once. The patient is lying there in their excrement. We have received letters pointing out that old people in care homes were vaccinated. Without the relatives' consent, without any explanation. The explanation does not take place. In the first months many reports came in that relatives in care homes had been vaccinated. I get letters like: help, what should I do? Could you help me, dying people are being vaccinated where I work. Then I wrote back: why are dying people being vaccinated there? Then the relatives are told: then they will live a few weeks longer.
Even if the vaccination does not lead to death, they are then completely inactive. They only lie in bed, they decline. They no longer take part in life and then die of the consequences. They get pneumonia, they get decubitus, that is, a pressure sore. They do not get out of bed any more. We also have connections to Israel, with whom we have exchanged information. They report to us about the situations in Israel too. In the intensive care units they only have boostered people, severe courses, they are all vaccinated there.
They say: but now we are not going along with it any more. The resistance in Israel is growing; it is not shown in the media that there are demonstrations there. People go out on the streets. They want hands to be kept off their children. Whom I myself regard as a psychologically very conspicuous patient: when Mr Lauterbach says, when Mr Lauterbach says only a vaccinated nurse is a good nurse, then I am not allowed to say what I think about it.
I ask myself whether Germany is in a position to dismiss us in such a short time and at the same time really replace this staff. I do not think so. But I would like to say just one thing: if they push this through, then I will no longer be available to the German health system. That is a consequence I draw from it. This cannot be it. We cannot fight a pandemic for two years. After these two years of pandemic I have to fight for my job. Even though I stayed healthy and did not put a burden on the system. For me that is intolerable.
I am basically at the point of thinking of leaving this country, because I find it so utterly disrespectful towards us. My first thought was: I am getting out of this job, because it was always conveyed to us that we are dispensable. The shortage of nursing staff has been there for years. Ever since my training I have seen that there is a shortage of nursing staff. Every day we juggle the shifts back and forth. So that I decided for myself: I do not want to leave my profession, because I do it very gladly. That is my vocation, and I will not give it up so easily. One of the most important medical principles that apply to me and that should also apply to most doctors is the individual risk-benefit analysis.
If one thing has been learned in the last two years, then it is clear which risk factors and age groups above all fall seriously ill with covid and which do not. That is why it is completely clear to me that one has to look at everyone individually. For one person it may make sense, but for the great majority of young, healthy people, from my point of view, certainly not. Well, I am not exactly grieving over my employer. I am being quite honest. Because anyone who denies me my human dignity — I feel sorry for that person that it comes to this at all. As far as I am concerned: above all my colleagues, I miss them very much.
But above all my clients and my patients. I had no chance to say goodbye. I love my job. It is a passion. But my health is important too. It makes me terribly sad, what is happening. Because I believe that many colleagues I know feel exactly the same. Our jobs are not just simply jobs.
It is a vocation, it is a passion. We do it with love and heart. And we are not deciding out of some defiant reaction that we do not want this vaccination. I am of the opinion that we are making ourselves guilty in many respects. As the medical profession as a whole. Because many of us primarily let ourselves be harnessed to a political wheel. In that we adopted slogans that come from the political camp. We first trumpeted that the vaccine is safe. This path has no alternative, and that path has no alternative. We did not do what we as doctors should have done. Namely remain independent. We then vaccinated people without informing them adequately.
Many were not informed adequately. It cannot work to vaccinate people in a vaccination centre at such a rate. When people come to us — I see that in the emergency department. I see it when people talk to me who are glad that I listen to them. They say: I feel like the fool. They all think I am mentally ill. Nobody takes me seriously. There we make ourselves guilty as doctors. We are there for the patient. Not for governments of any kind. A survey in our groups found that 90 per cent are prepared to go into unemployment. Or to have themselves suspended. That is a staggering figure.
I do not know whether in Baden-Württemberg we have so much nursing staff or so many employees in the clinic system that we can afford that. I do not think so. Sebastian, but I believe they will accept it as a price. They have been dismantling us for years. If it allows them to make political gains, they will do it. That is why we have to fight all the more.
Also tatsächlich nicht.
Es kam nirgends was, tatsächlich.
Weil da stehen schon sehr deutliche Worte drin.
Also, vielschichtiges Klientel von Kindern, neurologischen Patienten, Handtherapie. Also, überall unterwegs gewesen.
Also, müssen wir da hinschauen.
Was ist denn passiert? Strom ist ausgesteckt worden. Genau, uns wurde grad der Strom ausgesteckt. Sabotage.
Es stimmt mich wahnsinnig traurig, was passiert.
Also tatsächlich nicht.
Es kam nirgends was, tatsächlich.
Weil da stehen schon sehr deutliche Worte drin.
Also, vielschichtiges Klientel von Kindern, neurologischen Patienten, Handtherapie. Also, überall unterwegs gewesen.
Also, müssen wir da hinschauen.
Was ist denn passiert? Strom ist ausgesteckt worden. Genau, uns wurde grad der Strom ausgesteckt. Sabotage. Wie nicht anders zu erwarten. Habt ihr jemanden gesehen? Nein, aber hier war es ausgesteckt. Hier war es ausgesteckt? Deswegen bleiben wir jetzt halt hier stehen, so lang. Impfung hat schon fast einen religiösen Charakter.
Es stimmt mich wahnsinnig traurig, was passiert.
