Vera SharavEstos dos últimos años han sido especialmente duros porque me han traído recuerdos dolorosos. En 1941 mi familia fue deportada de Rumanía a Ucrania. Nos hacinaron en un campo de concentración, prácticamente abandonados a morir de hambre. La muerte estaba en todas partes, se cernía sobre nosotros. Mi padre murió en el campo de tifus, la enfermedad infecciosa que hacía estragos en todos los campos de concentración y guetos por las terribles condiciones sanitarias. El Holocausto no empezó en la cámara de gas de Auschwitz o de Treblinka. El Holocausto estuvo precedido de nueve años de restricciones progresivas de la libertad personal y de suspensión de los derechos civiles, en esencia, de los derechos humanos. El terreno se preparó con una propaganda que avivaba el miedo y el odio. Una serie de decretos gubernamentales humillantes y discriminatorios demonizaba a los judíos como propagadores de enfermedades. Se les comparaba con piojos. Pero la verdadera enfermedad viral que infectó a la Alemania nazi fue la eugenesia. La eugenesia es la ideología elitista que subyace a todos los genocidios. Fue adoptada por el estamento académico, médico y judicial tanto en Alemania como en Estados Unidos. Los eugenistas justificaban la desigualdad social y económica. Legitimaban la discriminación, el apartheid, la esterilización, la eutanasia y el genocidio.

Las siguientes víctimas fueron los enfermos mentales, seguidos de los ancianos de las residencias.

Vera SharavThese last two years have been particularly stressful because they brought back painful memories for me. In 1941 my family was deported from Romania to Ukraine. We were crammed into a concentration camp, essentially left to starve to death. Death was everywhere, looming over us. My father died inside the camp of typhus, which was the infectious disease rampant in all the concentration camps and ghettos because of the terrible sanitary conditions.
