The problem is not universal conscription. On the contrary, it can protect against a professional army that is too closely aligned with the state and strengthens the defensive capabilities of citizens.
The real problem is that our youth today are to be recruited by a government that has long since lost its credibility. A government that indulges in war rhetoric and willingly supports the geopolitical adventures of the plutocrats, while at the same time morally patronizing and lying to its citizens – the opposite of freedom.
These are the same politicians who have already shown during the coronavirus pandemic that “the dignity and rights of the individual” are not their top priority – contrary to what a statesman like Helmut Schmidt once warned.
And are our young people today supposed to follow rulers like “Cemetery-Friedrich” unconditionally?
